His ‘appropriations’ are free, complex and mix homage and questioning. ‘Muses,’ an exhibition now on display at Saxon Art Gallery, presents three strands of this investigation; three constructive/geometric series inspired by artists of various natures and universes, including figurative ones.

In ‘Stella’, the works are constructed in cut ACM (aluminum) painted with acrylic paint, whose compositions start from the superposition of contours of works by the American artist Frank Stella, emphasizing, in the elimination of the contents of the originals, the evident similarity of these paintings with those of artists from the Madi movement, which consists of one of the main contributions of Latin America to universal art. In fact, in Guedes’ trajectory, the influence of this movement is easily perceptible in various phases of his work. Whether with direct references or through the ‘Brazilian Neo-Concretism’ that maintains several affinities (accepted by some, denied by others) with Madi.

In ‘Klee’, Guedes makes a free and Cartesian deconstructive reconstruction of the work of the Swiss artist Paul Klee, entitled ‘Harmonized Region’, from 1938, which he met during a visit to The Art Institute of Chicago, also using cut aluminum and acrylic paint. This series brings from the original subtle relationships with form and the delicacy of the chromatic palette, however, subverting them and endless variations.

In ‘Homage to the Circle’ (a direct reference to Josef Albers’ ‘Homage to the Square’) the artist creates busy compositions, superimposing colored circles on a monochromatic base that is also circular. The colours of each element used in these compositions are picked up with digital tools from paintings by great masters such as Miró, Marden, Diebenkorn, Matisse, Morandi, Mondrian, and reproduced in acrylic paint on canvas. Each work brings as a title the source of the colours used.

‘Muses’ is an unprecedented exhibition, the official launch of these three series that merge to form a synthesis of the artist’s incursions into the fertile territory of the history of art.

{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

41,4,102
105
post-1761","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-41","category-invitation","category-sag-p29","tag-guedes-jose-bra
["GET
